Kozue's shikai is a somewhat big and bulky sword, nearly four times the size of her sealed katana form, though a bit wider. Fang like spikes outline the blade, and all of them are highly projectile and reattach once shot automatically. The notch on the top is bladed as well, used perfectly for cutting her tattooed wrists for her blood to make the zanpakuto stronger. The handle is about the same size as her unreleased katana hilt, and the red blood guard fabric is about twice the hilt's length.

Kozue uses a series of 'Keppan' or 'Seals of Blood' in her fighting techniques, having a bamboo ink pot filled with the red fluid with her at all times, along with her Zanpakutou for obvious reasons. There are dual markings on either of her wrists.. their reasons have only been shown to a few, though they are in direct cordination with the semi circle shape carved from her Zanpakutou.

She is a Shinigami, ranked 3rd, [Recently promoted from 4th seat of the 8th Division] in her squad, having much potential and a great loyalty to Seireitei. Many troubles hender Kozue's efforts of pleasing her Taichou and becoming better... she lacks the guts to kill another person. Not that she isn't strong enough, but that her personal moral fiber goes against this, so she will not strike a fatal blow on an enemy [Excluding a Hollow].

The Bamboo ink pot that never leaves her side, is filled with her own extracted blood mingling with a powerful poison, and when drenched upon her Zunukiba, it easily passes into the bloodstream when punctured, leaving the opponent with a dulled down, and nonfatal dose of a paralysis agent that could possibly, depending on the amount given, could last for days at a time.

Another problem Kozue faces is her Embolus, which she surely believes will end her life much faster than any Hollow or other enemy would..

During her time as a lower ranking officer in Kyouraku's Division, she had come across an injured Quincy, apparently after he had fought with one of the other Captains. Going against what she was told about the Quincy and the other Ryoka, she offered to give him aid, but he harshly denied her and went about his way. Soon after this, she was told that he had been captured and taken to a cell where some of the other intruders had been sent. Upon a formal request to her Taichou and Lieutenant, she was given permission to see them, and take them small meals and snacks from time to time. Trying as she might to become their friends, the Ishida male was the hardest to get to understand that she meant them no harm and had no motives. It was not until Aizen left and the Ryoka were going home, that he thanked her briefly for what she had done for them during their imprisonment and stay in the Seireitei.

Kozue had been given a few missions to regulate Hollow in the Living World, and once again, she would come across the Archer. It was quite clear that she had feelings for him, but he was still unreceptive toward even noticing the Shinigami, other than a comrade. It did take Uryuu a long time to develop any kinds of feelings for her, however, he did give in, and now takes a great deal of pride in protecting her with his life. She is very dedicated to him as well, willing to even go as far as to resign her position and live in Karakura full time, if he wanted her to.
